Liberty Weekend Luau - 25th & 26th July 2009

This fantastic annual two day field archery event took place in an area of the Thetford forest, Lakenheath, Suffolk, the home of Liberty Archers. Representing Westcott Archers was Fred Wentworth in the AFB class, John Newton, Hugh Stalker, Adrian Bryant and Terry Wentworth in the F/S class with Cass James and Andy Nichols in their respective compound UL classes.

The first days shooting, on a bright and sunny Saturday, introduced us all to an array of interesting and challenging targets. Those of special note included the long distance but enormous Moose, the Elk herd, a grass skirted bear and a flying Goose. The terrain included woodland, scrub land and open grassland where the course setters tried to deceive the eye by setting shots from shade to light, from light to shade and with trees and grassy banks as obstacles to overcome. Liberty had pre-publicized the inclusion of a Luau party on the Saturday evening (hence the grass skirted bear) and all where encouraged to dress up in Hawaiian attire. Many men as well as women took the opportunity to don their grass skirts and coconut shell bras (a sight to behold) with most others wearing bright Hawaiian shirts. It was a colourful spectacle where everyone could let themselves go and the party was enhanced with a limbo competition (imagine Andy Nicohls stooping so low). There was music, singing, dancing and much drinking (that wild turkey bottle never seemed to empty however much Andy tried).

Next day though the competition was rejoined, many with sore heads and slight hangovers from the reveling the night before but all soon got back into the swing. Of course the shots had been adjusted by the course layers so there was no advantage in remembering the distances from the day before but most seemed to better their scores of Saturday. We were successful too with Hugh and Adrian coming second and third respectively in the freestyle class and Cass coming third in ladies compound unlimited. Westcott was also successful with John, Hugh, Cass and Andy lifting the non-instinctive team trophy, a magnificent carved eagle.

Success also came in the raffle with Terry, Cass and Andy all winning prizes.

On the whole this a most enjoyable weekend and I would recommend it to anyone who seeks fun out of field archery.
